The Birth of the St. Albert Rams

It was spring 1985 and a guy by the name of Phil Wyllie had taken the short jaunt down the street to our house to visit us for a few minutes. With him was his son Nathan, then about eight years old, twirling this strange looking stick in his hands with what looked like a fishing net on one end. I asked Phil what Nathan was twirling and he answered that this was a Lacrosse stick.

Nathan was finishing the season, along with a few other boys from St. Albert, with the "Blues" from Jasper Place. That was the only available team to play for at the time. Our oldest son Mike tried the stick out in the yard, throwing and catching the ball back and forth with Nathan while Phil proceeded to tell us about the sport. He was excited to tell us about his dream to bring the sport back to St. Albert the following season.

Over the next few months, Phil would show us his preliminary drawings of the "logo" depicting the traditional Rams head and his name "The St. Albert Rams". By fall, a small group, maybe 5-6, of us parents joined him on the first executive, at the St. Albert Legion for our first meeting. Subject: recruitment and procedures.

The St. Albert Rams were born.
